Puducherry, Mar 26 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday promised to hold local body elections in the Union Territory at the earliest, if the party was voted to power in the April 6 Assembly election.
The party also promised in the manifesto to hold an International Investors Conference here in another two years to attract more investments.
The manifesto, released by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman, promised free education to girls from KG to PG classes, setting up of IT and textile parks, free laptops to high school and college students, provision of digital tablets to the students who passed 9th standard and setting up of a military school in Puducherry.
The party also promised to set up a 150 feet tall statue of poet Subramania Bharati, 50 percent reservation for women in local body elections, employment to 2.5 lakh youths, provision of a financial assistance of Rs 2000 to farmers, financial assistance of Rs.6000 to fishermen a year are among the 117 promises mentioned in the Manifesto.
However, there is no mention about statehood to Puducherry in the manifesto when the N R Congress, which is leading the NDA in UT, is taking up statehood as its main election plank.
It may be noted that the election manifesto was prepared by a 12-member committee led by former Minister A Namassivayam after hearing the views of 50,000 people.
Union Ministers Giriraj Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal, party incharges of Puducherry Nirmal Kumar Surana and Rajiv Chandraseker are among others who participated in the function.
