Huelva (Spain), Dec 14 : Reigning world champion PV Sindhu, young Lakshya Sen and the men’s duo of Satwik Sairaj and Chirag Shetty progressed to the BWF World Championships round-16 here on Tuesday.
Sindhu, who is seeded sixth in the tournament, started her campaign in the round-32 as she received a first round bye.
The Indian ace shuttler outclassed Martina Repiska of Slovakia by 21-7, 21-9 in a match lasted for just 24 minutes.
In the men’s singles, young Lakshya Sen defeated Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in a decider by 22-20, 15-21, 21-18 in one hour and 22 minutes.
The Asian Games bronze medallist Nishimoto started strongly in the first game but the 20-year-old Lakshya gave an equally impressive response, and pocketed the opening game 22-20.
Sen looked in control in the second game until the halfway mark, but Nishimoto was too quick and had taken out all the energy from the Indian by engaging him in the long rallies and took the second game by 21-15 to force a decider.
The third game was no different from the first two, as both the shuttlers were equally attacking. But Lakshya kept his cool and went all out to win the decider by 21-18.
The Indian men’s doubles team of Satwik and Chirag survived a hard fought battle against Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan of Chinese Taipie and paved their way to the pre-quarters with 27-25, 21-17 straight games win.
The eighth seeded Indian pair dropped five game points in the first game as Lee Yang refused to give up and tried every bit to snatch the opening set. But Chirag and Satwik were quick and eventually pocketed the game with 27-25 score line.
After the change of sides, the Indians put up a great fight since the beginning of the second game. Satwik and Chirag didn’t allow their opponent to take the match into decider and pocketed the match after taking the second set by 21-17.
