BWF Worlds : Arjun-Dhruv pair advances, Ashwini-Sikki duo falls

Tokyo, Aug 24 : India had mixed start of Day-3 of the BWF World Championships on Wednesday as the rising men’s doubles pair of M R Arjun and Dhruv Kapila sailed into round-of-16 while women’s doubles duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy and Pooja Dandu and Sanajan Santosh lost their respective round-of-32 matches.

Arjun and Dhruv staged huge upset as they registered a 21-17, 21-16 win over 2021 bronze medallists and eight-seed Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in a match that lasted 40 minutes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium to sail into the pre-quarterfinals of the mega event.

It was the first big win for Dhruv and Arjun at the highest level as the duo have been in consistent form in 2022.

The world no 35 Indian pair kicked-off the campaign with a hard fought 21-17, 17-21, 22-20 win over Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh and Kittinupong Kedren.

Arjun and Dhruv will face the Singaporeans Hee Yong Kai Terry and Loh Kean Hean for place in the quarterfinal.

On the other hand, Ashwini and Sikki suffered a 15-21, 10-21 loss at the hands of Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Chinese combination of Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan.

Pooja and Sanjana fell 15-21, 7-21 against Shin Seung-chan and Lee So Hee of South Korea.
