Chennai, jan 19 : The Chennai Press Club (CPC) today condemned the ‘arbitrary and forcible’ take over of the Kashmir Press Club (KPC) by a group of journalists and sought Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s intervention to hold elections to it in a democratic manner.
In a statement here, CPC Joint Secretary Bharathithamizhan condemned the forcible take over of the KPC with the help of the police and the administration on January 15.
“The alleged ‘re-registration’ of the KPC by a group of journalists supportive
of the the administration is nothing but a deliberate act to derail the democratic
process of holding elections”, he said.
“What is shocking is the role of the police in entering the premises of the KPC
without an warrant and violating the due process of law in aiding and abetting
the arbitrary take over of the premises”, he said.
The CPC expresses its deep concern over the shocking development in the
valley and similar attempts by alleged anti-social elements to illegally take
over the functioning of Press Clubs and derail the institutions, he said.
The CPC demands immediate intervention of Mr Amit Shah to issue appropriate
directions to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir to look into this
issue and restore status quo, Mr Bharathithamizhan said.
The CPC also demands that the democratic process of holding elections to the
KPC should be allowed to proceed as per schedule in an amicable manner and
the local administration should ensure a peaceful atmosphere for the democratically
elected body to conduct the affairs of the KPC.
