Kolkata, Mar 31 : The Election Commission has removed the SDPO, Haldia, and a Circle Inspector of Mahishadal police station on the eve of 2nd phase polling in East Medinipur, and ordered transfer of a Returning Officer in this metropolis, official sources said.
Haldia’s sub divisional police officer Barun Baidya has been removed with immediate effect and in this place Uttam Mitra has been asked to fill the post immediately. Baidya can be given an election related duty, the EC said.
Mahishadal police station circle inspector Bichitra Bikash Roy was also removed from his present posting and transferred to a non-election duty and Jalpaiguri circuit bench circle inspector Sirsendhu Das has been asked to take charge of Mahishadal police station.
The removal of the two police officials happened following recommendation of the EC appointed special police observer Vivek Dubey.
The opposition parties have been demanding removal of the two officers for their alleged partisan activities for many months.
West Bengal will witness the 2nd phase polls on April 1 for 30 assembly seats in the four districts of East and West Medinipur, Bankura and South 24 Parganas.
The EC in its latest notice also ordered for removal of Ballygunge assembly seat returning officer Arindam Mani, who has been posted in the same office for over 10 years.
The EC also sought a panel of three officers for filing the returning officer’s post.
