Srinagar, Apr 1 : People continued to enjoy pleasant weather on Thursday due to bright sunshine in the summer capital, Srinagar, and other parts of Kashmir valley, where another spell of moderate rain and snow is predicted from Sunday under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance (WD).
However, barring world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, the night temperature dipped and settled below normal across Kashmir valley, where the weather is expected to remain pleasant till Saturday.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that the weather is expected to remain dry in the valley with thundershowers at one or two places towards the evening in the valley. “The weather is expected to remain mainly dry till Saturday,” he said.
However, he said a fresh WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea and approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, would hit J&K on Sunday. “Under the influence of this WD, another spell of rain and snow would occur for four days from Sunday,” he added.
He said a weather warning has been issued for Monday, when thundershowers and lighting with Gusty winds (30-40 km/hour) could occur.
After witnessing the night temperature dipped and settled below normal due to overcast conditions, people woke up to a sunny Thursday morning in Srinagar. The weather remained pleasant throughout the day due to sunshine in the city, where people could be seen basking in the sun in parks, balconies and open fields. The maximum temperature settled several degrees above normal in Srinagar, where the mercury during the night dipped over 2 degree from Wednesday and settled at 4.2 degree, which is about 2 degree below normal.
He said the skies would be mainly clear to partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 22 degree and 4 degree, respectively.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which is covered under several feet of snow, also witnessed pleasant weather as bright sunshine greeted tourists, including adventure lovers. Gulmarg, which is known for its ski slopes and quality of snow, was the only place in the valley where the night temperature improved. Against minus 1 degree recorded on Wednesday, the night temperature in the ski resort settled at minus 0.4 degree, which is slightly above normal. “Tourists, particularly adventure lovers, are out on ski slopes, enjoying different snow related activities on a sunny day,” a hotelier from Gulmarg told UNI over the phone.
The mercury during the night at world famous health resort of Pahalgam settled below freezing point after several weeks. Against 1.7 degree recorded on Wednesday, the night temperature dipped and settled at minus 0.1 degree, which is about 2 degree above normal. But, the weather improved during the day due to sunshine, brining much needed relief to the tourists.
The mercury during the night at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag dipped and settled at 3 degree, 2 degree and 6.4 degree, respectively.
