Ex-MP Khabri is UP Congress Prez

Lucknow, Oct 1 : Former MP Brij Lal Khabri, who hails from the Dalit community, was on Saturday appointed president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress.

Along with Khabri, the party has also appointed six regional presidents.

According to a statement issued by party General Secretary K C Venugopal, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has appointed Khabri and six others with immediate effect.

Six regional presidents appointed by the party include Naseemuddin Siddiqui, Nakul Dubey, Ajay Rai, Virendra Chaudhary, Anil Yadav (Etawah) and Yogesh Dixit.

After the defeat of the party in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, then state President Ajay Kumar Lallu resigned from the post.

Khabri, from Etawah district, joined the Congress after quitting Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 2016.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jalaun seat on BSP ticket in 2009. He was again nominated to the Rajya Sabha by BSP in 2008.

He contested the Lok Sabha polls on Congress ticket but lost. In the last assembly election, the Congress fielded him from Mahrauni in Lalitpur district and his wife Urmila Sonkar Khabri from Orai in Jalaun district but both lost.
