Rajkot (Gujarat), March 29 : The under-construction Gujarat Greenfield Airport near here that is likely to improve both connectivity and employment in the state is likely to be inaugurated by August-September this year, an official said.
The airport in Hirasar, around 30 km from the city here, is being built at a cost of Rs 1,405 crore, Rajkot Collector Arun Mahesh Babu said. “At present more than 78 per cent of earth work and 75 per cent of runway, and other pavement works are completed.
The work for terminal building and ATC tower is also in progress,” he added. Citing that the present airport in Rajkot was suffering from considerable capacity restraints due to residential and commercial buildings around it, Babu said, “Large cargo aircrafts will be able to land easily with the completion of the new greenfield airport.”
“Rajkot is the commercial capital of Saurashtra as it is the hub of many manufacturing industries. It will increase the economic activities and employment to common people,” he further said. The international airport will also bring time- and cost-related solutions to logistics of different industries of the region, the Collector added. He also said 17 villages of Rajkot and Surendranagar districts will benefit from the new airport as around 20,000 people were likely to get employment at the beginning following opening of the airport.
Babu also asserted that the number of fights which are currently 13 daily to Rajkot airport, will increase to seven per hour. On October 7, 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the project.
