Gumla court awards 19 women convicts life imprisonment in double murder case

Gumla, August 4 : A local court in Gumla district of Jharkhand on Thursday awarded life imprisonment to 19 women who were earlier convicted for a double murder over suspected witchcraft.

The court of ADJ One Durgesh Chandra Awasthi announced the quantum of punishment in the
case on Thursday via video conferencing. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each
on all the convicts. Failing to pay the fine all of them will have to serve further imprisonment of
one more year.

Those who have been awarded life imprisonment included Bhaleria Indwar, Imalia Indwar, Kariya Devi, Jaraldita Indwar, Mangari Devi, Christina Indwar, Chintamani Devi, Vinita Indwar, Jyoti Indwar, Malti Indwar, Gabriella Indwar, Rajeeta Indwar, Monika Indwar, Casnesia Indwar, Nilima Indwar, Sushila Indwar, Kurmela Indwar, Lalita Indwar and Rozlia Indwar.

The incident had taken place on June 11, 2013 in Karondjor Tukutoli in Bharno block of this district when after meeting these women had beaten to death two other women of the whom they suspected of practicing witchcraft after a youth had died in the village.
