New Delhi, Dec 3 : MPs of INDIA bloc on Tuesday held a protest in the parliament premises over alleged bribery charges against the Adani Group and various other issues.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav were among those who participated in the protest.
Speaking to reporters, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “It’s a whole set of issues to do with the Modi Govenrment’s policies… To be very honest, it is a sort of clear signal to the ruling party that many of their policies have found very strong opposition throughout the country”.
On the Sambhal incident in Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav said, “Since the day the (winter) session started, Samajwadi Party has been trying to discuss the issue of Sambhal. That incident was a well-thought strategy of the BJP to engage people in such issues. Samajwadi Party cannot accept this. There should be a discussion on the Sambhal incident”
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi gave notice for an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the situation in Manipur.
“I move an adjournment motion to discuss Manipur’s grave and deteriorating situation. This conflict, which has been raging for over 18 months, has spiralled into a humanitarian crisis, marked by widespread violence, displacement, and economic devastation,” Gogoi said in the notice.
Gogoi highlighted the failure of the state government to contain the violence and restore peace in Manipur.
INDIA bloc MPs held the protest as the government and opposition parties reached an agreement to end the deadlock in the House, with dates set for discussions on the Constitution in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
“We have an agreement to ensure a smooth functioning of parliament. So we are protesting outside both Houses of parliament,” said an INDIA bloc leader.
The agreement was reached at a meeting of the floor leaders of all parties convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday. The leaders agreed on a special discussion on the Constitution during the session. The government agreed to allow certain issues like the situation in Bangladesh and the violence in Sambhal to be raised during Zero Hour.
The winter session of Parliament began on November 25 and will continue till December 20.
