India, Pakistan have opportunity at the upcoming SCO to break the ice: Mirwaiz

Srinagar, Oct 5 : A day after New Delhi announced that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will travel to Islamabad to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) next week, Kashmir’s separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that India and Pakistan have a real opportunity at the upcoming Summit to break the ice and engage constructively.
In the first such visit in nearly a decade, EAM Jaishankar will head the delegation that will represent India at the meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of Government to be held in the Pakistani capital during October 15-16.
All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz in his first post on X, since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, hoped that India and Pakistan avail the opportunity at the upcoming SCO Summit to break the ice.
“After more than 5 years, mostly spent under house detention, when J&K, in the August of 2019, went through the rude shock and humiliation of losing its semi-autonomous status, was broken into two parts, downgraded to a union territory followed by a no-holds-barred clampdown and communication blackout, I return to this platform with the same hope of peace and justice for the people of Jammu & Kashmir that I have always desired,” Mirwaiz said on X.
“Despite increased challenges, the resolve for peaceful resolution of the conflict remains stronger than ever. Generations of Kashmiris have been consumed by the uncertainty. We want an end to it, a fair closure. India and Pakistan have a real opportunity at the upcoming SCO Summit to break the ice and engage constructively. Hope they heed to it,” he added.
On Friday, Mirwaiz, while addressing a congregation at historic Jamia mosque in Srinagar, had urged the central government to start a dialogue to resolve the issues and that Hurriyat was ready to assist in the endeavour.
