International News Update : Yumkham Erabot takes oath as MLA

Imphal, Apr 21 : Yumkham Erabot Singh was sworn today in as a

member of 15- Wangkhei Assembly Constituency at Conference Hall of

Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat, Imphal.

Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Y Khemchand administered

the oath of office and secrecy to the newly inducted member. Chief

Minister N. Biren Singh and others attended the function.

Justice M.V. Muralidaran of Manipur High Court on April 15 ruled

the election of Wangkhei Assembly Constituency MLA, Okram Henry who

also serves as the Minister , Social Welfare in the 11th Manipur

Legislative Assembly as null and void.

The Court also declared that the petitioner Yumkham Erabot Singh “is

duly elected as a member of 15-Wangkhei Assembly constituency.

Henry contested as a Congress candidate secured 16753 votes while

the petitioner Yumkham Erabot Singh of BJP got 12417 and AITC

Candidate Rajkumar Priyobrata secured 149 votes. Henry resigned and

joined the BJP government led by N Biren Singh as Minister Social

Welfare on Sep 24, 2020.

This was the second case of two Congress MLAs being disqualified for

giving incorrect information in the affidavits filed during election.

Earlier Y Surchandra of Kakching was disqualified and BJP candidate M

Rameshwar who got second position was declared winner on Nov 5, 2020.

Surchandra also resigned as Congress member and joined BJP earlier.

O Henry had given different educational qualifications during the

papers submitted in 2012 and 2017 elections. In 2012 he furnished his

highest educational qualification as B.A. from Punjab University and

Class XIl from Manipur Public School, CBSE in 2017 elections. The

petitioner, Y Erabot had also moved the court stating that O Henry did

not give full details of a Criminal case and a drug case in the

affidavits.
