TEHRAN, Sep 21 : Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Tehran welcomes the improvement of relations with Saudi Arabia, the Iranian presidency’s website reported on Wednesday.
Raisi, however, insisted that the reconciliation process should proceed based on the agreements reached in the talks between the two countries’ officials in Iraq.
The president made the remarks when meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, in which the two sides also discussed bilateral ties.
Raisi lauded Iraq for its goodwill and efforts to improve relations among regional countries, including Iran and Saudi Arabia, stressing that Tehran always takes the Muslim world’s interests into account in its regional ties.
The Iraqi prime minister praised the Iranian government’s goodwill and efforts to expand cooperation with his country.
Baghdad has so far brokered several rounds of Tehran-Riyadh talks aimed at a rapprochement between the two sides.
Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran in early 2016 in protest against the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran after the Saudi execution of a Shiite cleric.
