J&K NGO office sealed over ‘Covid orphans sale’

Srinagar, Dec 2 : Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday sealed the office of a non-governmental organization (NGO), which has been accused of selling Covid orphans.

Official sources said, police and government officials raided the office of the “Global Welfare Charitable Trust” in Samboora area of Pampore township in south Kashmir district of Pulwama for being allegedly involved in the sale of Covid orphans and seized all documents and sealed the office.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday lodged an FIR after alleged illegal adoption and sale of Covid orphans came in to the notice of Mission Director, Integrated Child Protection Service (ICPS) J&K.

The NGO came into the notice of ICPS following reports in the media regarding the alleged sale by two persons.

Mission Director, ICPS, Shabnam Kamili directed the authorities concerned and the FIR was lodged at Pampore police station.

Social Welfare Department Secretary Sheetal Nanda also took up the issue with IGP, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar for immediate action in the matter.

Kamili had issued instant orders to Child Welfare Committees to meet the already identified Covid orphans personally.

These Covid orphans were already identified by the department and their information uploaded on different online portals of Government of India. The Child Welfare Committees were asked to submit a report to the Directorate of ICPS within a day’s time.

A fact-finding committee was also constituted for the Jammu and Kashmir divisions in order to ascertain the number of orphans and Covid orphans and their well being in all the districts of the UT.
