Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 20 : Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan conveyed their greetings and good wishes to CPI (M) veteran and former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on his 98th birthday on Wednesday.
The Governor said “My heartiest greetings and best wishes to former Chief Minister Shri VS Achuthanandan on his 98th birthday. I join the people of Kerala in wishing him good health and happiness.”
The Chief Minister wished Achuthanandan, who is also Chairman of Kerala Administrative Reform Commission, happiness, good health and the continued love of the people of Kerala.
“Conveyed my heartiest wishes to V S Achuthanandan,” Mr Vijayan said.
Opposition leader VD Satheesan, CPI(M) State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, KPCC president K Sudhakaran, MPs, MLAs and leaders of various political parties have also greeted Mr Achuthanandan, who is also known as Fidel Castro of Kerala.
He entered politics through trade union activities and joined State Congress in 1938.
In 1940, he became a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI). During his 40 years as a politician, the former Chief Minister was imprisoned for five years and six months and was in hiding for four and half years.
The CPI-M Veteran was a state secretariat member of the CPI in 1957. He is the only living Keralite among the 32 members who left the CPI National Council in 1964 to form the CPI(M).
Mr Achuthanandan was the Secretary of the Kerala State Committee between 1980 and 1992.
