New Delhi, Aug 29 : Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday slammed the Narendra Modi government over the issues of women safety and alleged that the centre has not taken any concrete steps in the last 10 years to prevent crime against women.

Taking to social media handle X, Kharge said, “Any injustice done to our women is intolerable, painful and highly condemnable. We need to ‘ensure equal rights to our daughters’, not just ‘save daughters’. Women do not need protection they need a fear-free environment”.

He said that every hour 43 crimes against women are recorded in the country whereas 22 crimes are registered against women and children of the most vulnerable Dalit-tribal class daily.

“Prime Minister Modi has talked about women’s safety several times in his speeches at the Red Fort, but his government has not done anything concrete in the last 10 years that could prevent crimes against women. On the contrary, his party has also assassinated the victim’s character several times, which is shameful,” the Congress President said.

Kharge said that the Constitution has given equal status to women. Crimes against women are serious issues and stopping these crimes is a big challenge for the country.

“We all have to unite and find solutions to this by taking every section of the society along. Be it gender sensitisation curriculum or gender budgeting, women call centres or basic facilities like street lights and women washrooms in our cities, or our police reforms or Judicial reforms – now the time has come for us to take every step that can ensure a fear-free environment for women,” the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha said.
