Kolkata tops in Covid cases with death and infected people in Bengal
Kolkata, Jul 14 : The city of Kolkata topped the list in Coronavirus cases-both
in number of death and new infected people – among the cities and towns as total
casualties rose to 956 across West Bengal even as a fresh 7-day lockdown was
imposed on July 9, official data said.
Concerns have been expressed everywhere with increasing new cases reported
every day when the state health department bulletin as on July 13 said total 1435
new infected cases were reported and casualties were 24 in past 24 hours.
Altogether 31,448 people have been infected and total death 956 as on July 13
since the first death was reported on March 23 last.
Among the total infected people in Bengal, Kolkata counted 10026 and 509
deaths, followed by North 24 Parganas with 5992 infected people and 172 deaths
and Howrah had 4120 and 129 respectively. The recovery rate, however, was a
silver lining with a rate of 61.09 per cent as some 19213 people have been healed
from the dreaded virus.
Yesterday Hooghly district Deputy Magistrate Debdatta Ray (38) succumbed
to pandemic at a government hospital in Serampore.
” Grieved to hear about the untimely passing away of Debdatta Ray, who was posted
as Deputy Magistrate & Deputy Collector in Chandannagar. A young WBCS (Exe)
Officer, she was at the forefront fighting the pandemic & displayed outstanding devotion
in discharge of her duties,” lamented chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
” I, on behalf of the Govt of West Bengal, salute her spirit & the sacrifice she’s made
in service of the people of #Bengal. Spoke to her husband today & extended my
deepest condolences. May the departed soul rest in peace & lord give her family strength
to endure this loss,” the chief minister said in her condolence message.
