Pune, Aug 6 : A mob in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar city attacked a 23-year-old man with sharp weapons accusing him of supporting BJP leader Nupur Sharma who made derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad. The Ahmednagar police arrested four men on Saturday.
On Thursday evening, at least 14 people from a community attacked Pawar with swords, sickles, sticks and hockey sticks in front of a medical shop at Akkabai Chowk in Karjat city, 222 km from Ahmednagar district headquarters.
Talking to UNI, City Superintendent of Police Manoj Patil said the injured identified as Pratik alias Sunny Rajendra Pawar, has been admitted to a hospital ICU after deep injuries to his head and other body parts.
The Ahmednagar SP Patil said Pawar was attacked by the mob after accusing him of supporting suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on social media.
Four of the main accused in the incident that took place on August 4 have been arrested, police said Saturday.
A senior official was tight-lipped about the motive behind the attack as the investigation was in its initial stages.
The official said the incident took place when Pawar and Amit Mane, the complainants in the case, were going to attend an event on their two-wheeler and were waiting for a friend near the medical shop.
Some people from another community approached him on two-wheelers.
According to the FIR, they were carrying a sword and sickle and a hockey stick.
Mane, in his complaint filed on Friday, said that one of them shouted at Pawar and said that he had written a post on social media in support of Nupur Sharma and posted a status on Instagram after Kanhaiya Lal’s murder and then attacked him.
Kanhaiya Lal was murdered by two men in Udaipur for sharing a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma in June. Sharma’s comments on the Prophet created a huge row, including diplomatic situation and inviting strong comments from the Supreme Court after several lives were lost in the aftermath.
The assailants threatened Pawar that he would also suffer the same fate as Amravati chemist Umesh Kolhe, who was also murdered. As per the FIR, the officer said that one of the assailants attacked Pawar’s eyes.
Kolhe was murdered in Maharashtra’s Amravati district for allegedly supporting Nupur Sharma on social media as well.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is investigating the case.
After Pawar was injured, Mane called two of his friends and they took Pawar to a government hospital,
The senior police official said that Pawar has a criminal background and two cases are pending against him. Pawar was previously exiled for his criminal activities.
Another police officer said, “So far during investigation we have not found any post by Pawar on Nupur Sharma. We are checking all his social media accounts including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.”
He said that the victim had some old enmity with members of a group, which may have led to the attack.
An FIR has been registered against 14 people under several IPC sections.
