Patna : Former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Thursday threatened to embrace Buddhism if the atrocities against dalits continue. Manjhi who founded Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) after parting ways with Nitish Kumar said he was readying to follow the footsteps of Bhimrao Ambedkar.

Addressing a function to observe death anniversary of Ambedkar, he said Buddhism was the only way for dalits to gain equality. “I am ready to embrace Buddhism, but not any other religion, with my followers and adopt the path that Baba sahib showed us,” he said.

Ambedkar had embraced Buddhism with his followers on October 14, 1956 at Nagpur, after feeling suffocated and humiliated in Hindu fold. He came to the conclusion that untouchables would get equality only when they walkout of Hindu religion which was allegedly dominated by Brahminical order.

Manjhi said that he would discuss the matter with his supporters. “It is a historical fact that dalits have been isolated in Hindu fold because of Brahminical order,” he alleged. Ambedkar had taken 20 years for conversion after he declared his intent to convert.

Manjhi, who in now in grand alliance also raised reservation for dalits in private sector jobs. He said the constitution is under threat and he would agitate for the rights and reservation for dalits.
