Patna, Oct 30 : An estimated 38 percent electorate exercised their franchise till 1 PM in by-elections for two assembly seats Tarapur and Kusheshwarsthan where polling is in progress.
Sources of the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar said here that an estimated 38 percent electorate exercised their franchise till 1 PM in by-elections for Tarapur and Kusheshwarsthan assembly seats.
Polling had been peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the two
assembly constituencies where polling was in progress, sources added.
In Kusheshwarsthan seat, 36.55 percent polling was reported while in Tarapur seat 39 percent electorate exercised their franchise. Polling was slow in early hours but it got momentum as the day progressed.
Voters mostly women were seen travelling in boat in water logged areas of Kusheshwarsthan to cast their votes at booth number 236 and 237. At booth number 44, all women polling personnel have been deployed where female voters are exercising their votes. Candidates have also authorised women polling agents at this booth on request of administrative officials.
In Tarapur, voters were seen in large numbers at booths, waiting for their turn to cast votes. Former Bihar Minister Shakuni Chaudhary exercised his franchise in Tarapur seat.
By-elections for two seats got necessitated following deaths of sitting JD(U) MLAs from both the seats. Sitting JD(U) MLA from Tarapur Mewalal Chaudhary and another sitting JD(U) MLA from Kusheshwarsthan Shashi Bhushan Hazari died after which both the seats had fallen vacant.
Altogether nine candidates are in fray for Tarapur while eight candidates are in fray for Kusheshwarsthan assembly seat. A total of 2.57 lakh electorate are in Kusheshwarsthan of which
1.35 lakh electorate are male and 1.21 lakh electorate are female. Similarly, in Tarapur seat, out
of total number of 3.28 lakh electorate, male voters are 1.76 lakhs while female voters are 1.51 lakh.
Total number of 264 main booths and 46 auxiliary booths have been set up up in Kusheshwarsthan while 338 main booths and 68 auxiliary booths have been set up in Tarapur to enable electorate to exercise their franchise under full security cover. Polling would continue till 4 PM. Special vigil is
being maintained in Hilly terrain and naxalite affected areas to thwart any attempt of trouble mongers
to disturb the polling.
