Islamabad, Mar 23 : The Pakistan People’s Party(PPP) leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Tuesday managed to win the crucial support of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) which decided to back the PPP’s candidate and former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani for post of the opposition leader in the Senate.
The JI said that it agreed with PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto’s contention that the majority party has the right to that important slot in the Senate, Dawn reported.
The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) of which the PPP and the JI, an amalgamation of opposition parties in Pakistan formed to oppose the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan saw fissures developing in the alliance when the PML-N and the PPP differed on who should be given the slot of the leader of opposition in the Senate.
The schism in the PDM widened when both the PPP and the PML-N hardening their stance on Sunday with Bilawal insisting that the party enjoying a majority in the Senate has the right to nominate “leader of the opposition”. That is what the parliamentary tradition is and must be respected.
