Bhubaneswar, Oct 3 : The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate Rudra Pratap Maharathi is leading by 3317 votes against his nearest rival Ashrit Patnaik of BJP at the end of the second round counting of votes for the Pipili bypoll.
While Mr Maharathi secured 9030 votes, Mr Ashrit Patnaik of BJP got 5713 votes and the Congress candidate Boswokeshan Harichandan got 981 votes at the end of the second round of counting None of the seven other candidates contesting the by-elections have managed to secure100 votes .
The by-election to Pipili Assembly constituency was held on September 30 last following the death of sitting BJD MLA Pradip Maharathi on October 4 last year.
The by-election to Pipili Assembly constituency was postponed thrice earlier due to various reasons.
Though as many as ten candidates including three Independents are contesting the by election but the elections is being fought mainly among the candidates of three main political parties— BJD, BJP and the Congress.
In addition to the three political parties, CPIML, RPI, Akhil Bharathiya Hindu Mahasabha and Kalinga Sena have also fielded their candidates in the by-elections.
Late Pradip Maharathy of BJD had won the seat six times — twice in 1985 and in 1990 as Janata Dal candidate and four times— in 2000,2004,2009 and 2014 as BJD candidate.
BJD has fielded his son Rudra Pratap maharathi to contest the byelection this time.
