Police attacked, Inspector injured

Badaun (UP), Aug 6 : Several policeman were injured, one of them seriously, when villagers attacked them after a decomposed body of a youth missing since July 24 was recovered from a field in Wazirganj area in Badaun district in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, police sources said.

On July 24, Sukhbir (17) of Pepal village went missing. “The family members lodged a police complaint on July 27 after they failed to find him,” an officer said.

The police sources said that two days later Sukhbir’s brother Sunil Kumar expressed apprehension that he had been kidnapped by Komal Ram, his wife Sukh Devi, Rampal and Kallu, all residents of Barkhera village, after which the missing case was converted into that of kidnapping.

“On Saturday morning, around 10 am, the decomposed body of Sukhbir was recovered from a field. When Inspector Mahesh Singh along with a police force reached the spot and tried to take the body, they were attacked by angry villagers,” the officer said.

The police team attempted to retreat but the villagers brutally assaulted Inspector Mahesh Singh and Constable Pushpendra Singh. “Singh sustained serious injuries in the attack and several other policemen were also injured. They have been admitted to the district hospital,” the officer said.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Siddharth Verma said the police team was attacked after it reached the spot.

District Magistrate Deepa Ranjan said: “Police have been deployed in the village. The situation will normalise soon.”
