Chennai, Nov 5 : The principal Opposition AIADMK and its ally, the BJP on Friday demanded the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu to take steps to reduce the prices of petrol and diesel in the State in line with the reduction announced by the Centre.

Welcoming the Centre’s announcement, former Chief Minister and AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam urged the State government to take a cue from various states and reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel by Rs seven per litre.

‘At least, to honour its promise made in the election manifesto, the DMK government should reduce the VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs two and four respectively in the interests of the country and taking into account the welfare of the people of all sections of the society”, he said, in a statement here.

Mr Panneerselvam said reducing the VAT on petrol and diesel will lead to reduction in fuel prices, which in turn will also result in reduction in prices of essential commodities.

Meanwhile, BJP State President K Annamalai questioned the ruling DMK’s silence on the issue. Talking to reporters here, he pointed out the DMK demanded reduction in fuel prices when it was in the Opposition, but was silent on reducing the state tax on petrol and diesel.

He said the DMK, which had made it an election issue, had earlier stated that it would reduce the fuel prices if the Centre reduce the taxes. But now it was silent on the issue even after the Centre announced reduction in taxes by Rs five on petrol and Rs 10 on diesel.

At a time when other states have taken the cue from the Centre and had reduced the taxes, the DMK government was silent on the issue, he added.
