Regret for your ‘misconduct’ first, Naidu tells suspended Rajya Sabha members

New Delhi, Dec 2 : Signaling once again that revoking of the suspension of the 12 members could be considered provided they express regret for their ‘misconduct’, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday asked the treasury bench and the opposition to find a way out and ensure that the House functions normally.

“I urge both sides of this august House to talk it out and find a way to do the mandated job of this House. This is my appeal to the entire House,” Naidu said while members of the Opposition continued to protest against the suspension.

Naidu noted that it is human to err and it is also human to make amendments suggesting that suspended members should apologise first before asking for revoking their suspension.

He stated that suspension in the past or even now is only an expression of disapproval of the misconduct of some of the members.

Expressing his anguish over the disruptions of the House, Naidu said, “While calling the suspension of members undemocratic both in the House and outside, not even a word is being said about the reasons given for their suspension.”

“You don’t want to regret for your misconduct but insist on revoking the decision of this august House taken as per due procedure laid under the rules of the House. Does this amount to upholding the principle of democracy”? He further said as Opposition members continued to protest.

Unfortunately a message is sought to be sent that sacrilege of the House is democratic but action against such sacrilege is undemocratic, said Naidu.

“There were suspensions in the past, some of them revoked prematurely because the errant members regretted. I am deeply pained to know from media reports of the categorical refusal to express any regret for the act of misconduct during the last session,” he said.

As members of the opposition refused to budge from their position and remained standing on their feet in protest against the suspension of their fellow members, House was adjourned to meet at 12 PM.
