Russia to increase cargo traffic via Northern Sea Route – Putin

Insight Online News

Vladivostok, Sep 5 : Russia will continue to increase cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

“We will continue to increase cargo traffic [via the Northern Sea Route] , including through the active development of Arctic deposits, redirecting cargo from West to East by increasing transit,” Putin said during the plenary session of the the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

The country will also continue to increase the capacity of Russian ports within the borders of the Northern Sea Route, Putin added.

“Two years ago, cabotage voyages were launched along the Northern Sea Route, today there are 14 ports in the Northwest, Arctic and Far East in this scheme.

I would like to note that by the end of last year, the capacity of Russian ports within the borders of the Northern Sea Route exceeded 40 million tonnes. Of course, we believe that this is just the beginning, and we will continue to increase their capabilities, modernize cargo transshipment, and expand short- and long-distance railway approaches to them,” Putin said.

The Eastern Economic Forum began on Tuesday and will run through Friday. It is being hosted by the Far Eastern Federal University in Russia’s Pacific coast city of Vladivostok. Sputnik is the general information partner of the EEF 2024.
