Sensex down 37.70 points

Mumbai, Sep 27 : Extending losses for the fifth straight session, the BSE Sensex fell 37.70 points to close at 57,107.52 as selling was seen in capital goods, power, metal and bankex stocks.

The Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) too eased 8.90 points at 17,007.40.

The Sensex opened higher at 57,376.52, up 231 points. It surged nearly 559 points at 57,704.57, the day’s high. In later trade, it dropped 190 points at 56,950, the day’s low, before closing at 57,107.52, sliding 37.70 points from its previous close.

In scrips, Tata Steel was a major loser, down by 2.25 per cent to Rs 97.60 followed by Titan by 1.79 per cent to Rs 2,606.95, SBI by 1.39 per cent to Rs 536.25, Kotak Bank by 1.10 per cent to Rs 1,808.95 and Tech Mahindra by 1.08 per cent to Rs 1,022.50.

The gainers were Powergrid by 1.81 per cent to Rs 204.90, IndusInd Bank by 1.32 per cent to Rs 1,164.40, Dr Reddy’s Lab by 1.29 per cent to Rs 4,185.70 and HCL Technology by 1.25 per cent to Rs 918.25.

The Mid Cap rose by 0.01 per cent and Small Cap by 0.49 per cent.

In 30 scrips, 18 advanced while 12 declined.
