Bratislava, Oct 3 : After a break of more than four months, the Slovak basketball premiership SBL started its 30th season on Saturday with three out of the four scheduled matches of the 1st round played out.
The runner-up of the previous season Levice Patriots began the season with a close home defeat, succumbing to BKM Lucenec 85-82. The Patriots had the game under clear control right until the final moments when BKM tied the score and then grabbed the lead. The 25-year-old visiting guard Kyle Caistlin dominated the scoring department with 31 points on his SBL debut.
The third team of the previous season Iskra Svit offered a thrilling match with a happy ending to its home fans, winning the match by 91-89. The visiting BC Prievidza built a small lead in the final minutes but Svit sank two free throws and pushed the game into overtime. The score remained extremely close, but again, Iskra took over the final moments with two successful free throws to earn a significant victory at the beginning of the season.
Despite a slow start, the newcomer BC Komarno dominated the third period against MBK Banik Handlova and built a nine-point lead that resulted in an 80-65 victory in the end. Handlova did not make the playoffs in the previous season largely due to losing their away games and continued this trend in the season-opener.
The match between Spis Knights and Inter Bratislava was postponed to Wednesday.
