Spain, Belgium reach FIBA Women’s EuroBasket quarterfinals

Jerusalem, June 19 : Spain and Belgium on Sunday secured spots in the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023 quarterfinals after finishing first in their four-team groups at the Shlomo Group Arena in Tel Aviv, Israel.
In Group A, Spain beat Greece 76-60 and finished in first place with a 2-1 win-loss record.
Queralt Casas scored 16 points for Spain, while teammate Raquel Carrera logged 14 points and eight rebounds. Artemis Spanou scored 14 points for Greece.
Montenegro also achieved a 2-1 record in Group A after a 61-58 win over Latvia, but finished only as runner-up due to their loss to Spain on Friday.
Montenegro’s Natasha Mack recorded a double-double of 22 points and 20 rebounds, while teammate Jelena Vucetic contributed 11 points. Latvia’s Anete Steinberga scored a game-high 23 points.
Montenegro and third-placed Greece advance to the qualification stage, from which it is possible to qualify for the quarterfinals, while Latvia were eliminated.
In Group B, Belgium finished first without defeat, beating Italy 72-64 mainly thanks to 23 points from Julie Vanloo, alongside 20 points and 9 rebounds from teammate Emma Meesseman. Olbis Andre scored a team-high 17 points for Italy.
The Czech Republic overcame Israel 61-52 to finish second, and advanced to the qualification phase along with Italy, while winless Israel were eliminated.
Veronika Vorackova scored 16 points for the Czech Republic, while teammate Renata Brezinova added 14. Daniel Raber contributed 20 points and nine rebounds for Israel.
In the qualification phase on Monday, also to be held in Tel Aviv, Montenegro will play Italy, while the Czech Republic will face Greece.
The two winners will advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played on Thursday in Ljubljana, and will also include four teams from Group C and Group D.
