Stalin unveils Karuna statue in Erode

Chennai, Aug 26 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin

unveiled a statue of late DMK Patriarch and former five time

chief minister M Karunanidhi at Kallipatti in Gobichettipalayam

in Erode district last evening.

Addressing after unveiling the statue, Stalin said Erode was

not only the birth place of social reformer and rationalist

leader EVR Periyar, but it was also a ‘gurukulam’ that moulded

Karunanidhi.

Recollecting Karunanidhi’s links with Erode, he said ‘Kalaignar’

enacted a drama ‘Thooku Medai,’ during the Dravidar Kazhagam

conference in 1948.“It was then, Kalaignar made his entry in

films,” he added.

He said ‘Thanthai’ Periyar was instrumental in installing a

statue of Kalaignar on the arterial Anna Salai in Chennai

city in 1975.

“But it was vandalised in 1987″, he said, adding, “I do not

want to go further into it”.

Stalin also inaugurated distribution of one lakh saplings

to school students and an outreach programme of the party’s

environment wing.

In the outreach programme, named ‘sutruchulal kakka palagu’

(learn to protect the environment), the environment wing

has roped in experts to address students in schools and

colleges to create awareness on environmental issues,

climate change, zoonotic diseases, afforestation, water

conservation and growing home gardens.
