Auckland, Aug 9 : Sweden and Japan are set to do battle in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 quarter-finals here on Friday. The excitement is building ahead of the fourth Women’s World Cup clash between Sweden and Japan. The two sides have met three times at a Women’s World Cup, but haven’t met since the 2011 semi-final. Sweden hold the upper hand with two wins to Japan’s one, including an 8-0 drubbing at the 1991 edition. Japan, however, won the last encounter 3-1 in 2011 en route to winning the tournament. Sweden may have been forgiven for thinking that their hardest task was behind them when they defeated four-time champions and the No1 ranked team on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking in the last 16. Not so. The quarter-finals will bring them face-to-face with the most in-form team of the tournament so far, Japan. Fridolina Rolfo, Hanna Bennison and Zecira Musovic spoke to FIFA about the challenge that they are expecting in the quarter-final, and what they have seen from the Nadeshiko so far. “I think Japan is maybe the most exciting team and maybe the team who’s impressed me the most so far,” goalkeeper Musovic said. They are confident that they will be able to overcome Japan on Friday, but Sweden are under no illusions that it will be easy.
