Trump, if elected, may find solution with Putin to stop NATO enlargement: Sachs

Washington, Sep 4 : If Republican US presidential nominee Donald Trump wins the election in November, he is expected to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin to find a solution to stop NATO’s enlargement eastward, Jeffrey Sachs, a world-renowned economist and President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, told Sputnik.

“I expect [Trump] him to find a solution with President Putin to stop NATO enlargement and on that basis to end the fighting one way or another,” Sachs said when asked what he expects from a potential Trump presidency on Ukraine.

Sachs added, however, that Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris might do the same as Trump because the US public is tired of providing aid to Ukraine.

“Ukraine is running out of soldiers, US munitions inventories are bare, and the US budget deficit is high,” Sachs said.

“If Harris wins the election, and reasons sensibly, she should end the war – by ending NATO enlargement – in order to give room for an effective presidency.”

Sachs emphasised that conflict in Ukraine can and should be ended with diplomacy as soon as possible. The United States needs to deal with problems at home, not in the Donbas, he added.

The Ukraine conflict was born of US hubris in pushing NATO’s eastward expansion and participating in a coup in 2014, according to Sachs.
