UP News Update : UP govt appoints two new Police commissioner for Varanasi, Kanpur

Lucknow, Mar 26 : The Uttar Pradesh government has appointed A Satish Ganesh as the first police commissioner (CP) of Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime minister Narendra Modi and Aseem Arun as the CP of Kanpur city.

Late Thursday night, the state cabinet had approved the Police Commissionerate System in Kanpur and Varanasi, and the appointments of CPs were done early Friday morning.


According to sources, both the Commissioner of Police (CP) belonged to ADG rank.

Besides the two CPs, the government has posted two IG or DIG rank officers, and 8 SP rank officers in Kanpur. At the same time, in Varanasi Police Commissionerate, the government has posted two Additional Commissioners of Police level of DIG and 9 Deputy Commissioner of Police (SP rank).

The new CP of Varanasi, a 1996 batch IPS officer A. Satish Ganesh was presently posted as ADG Zone in Agra. A. Satish Ganesh, a resident of Bilaspur, Madhya Pradesh, was born in 1969.

At the same time, Aseem Arun, the new CP of Kanpur is a 1994 batch IPS, and was currently handling the responsibility of Dial 112. Aseem Arun, a resident of Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh, was born in 1970.

Already two cities of Lucknow and Noida are under the Police Commissionerate system. Both systems were brought to the Police Commissionerate system in January 2020.

Both police commissioners will have magisterial power.

The system gives more powers, including magisterial powers, to police officers and is aimed at better and effective policing, the official here said.

Under the new system, 28 police stations, including 10 of rural areas in Varanasi will be brought under the police commissioner who will have a team of two IGs as joint commissioners, nine SP-rank officials and a lady officer of SP rank along with a lady officer of ASP rank.

“The lady officers will work exclusively for cases relating to crime against women and its control,” the official said.

In Kanpur, 45 police stations will be brought under the police Commissionerate system. The system will be headed by an ADG rank official as commissioner, there will be two DIGs, five SPs, a SP-rank lady officer and an ASP rank official.

“The government has decided to bring Kanpur and Varanasi under the Commissionerate system following the success of this system in Lucknow and Noida,” the official said.
