Balasore, June 3 : Asserting the urgent need to prioritise the Railways to enhance efficiency, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday iterated that as former Railway Minister with an understanding of internal workings, she strongly advocated better coordination to prevent accidents that risk innocent lives.

Banerjee, who rushed to the accident site at Bahanaga in Odisha’s Balasore to to oversee the search and rescue operations following the ghastly train accident on Friday in which at least 261 people lost their lives and more than 900 injured, categorically stated had there been an anti- collision device, this major accident could have been averted.
She announced a financial assistance of ₹ 5 Lakh to every affected family from Bengal and also requested the Railway Minister to provide aid.

She confirmed that a dedicated team of 50 officers, along with doctors and nurses, had been deployed to assist with relief efforts and promised a financial assistance of ₹1 lakh to those who
are severely injured and ₹50,000 to those with minor injuries.
The West Bengal Government has sent 110 Ambulances and 40 Doctors to Odisha and will
continue to cooperate with the involved authorities.

Banerjee asserted the urgent need to prioritise the Railways to enhance efficiency, saying, ” As former Railway Minister with an understanding of internal workings, she strongly advocates better coordination to prevent accidents that risk innocent lives. “

She urged the affected individuals to contact the emergency control room at 033-22143526/22535185 for immediate assistance and information related to the tragic incident.
