Woman killed, 12 hurt in LPG cylinder blast in TN

Chennai, Nov 23 : A woman was killed and 12 others sustained injuries in a LPG cooking cylinder blast at Karungalpatti village in Salem district of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

Reports received at the police headquarters here said the deceased woman was identified as Rajeswari. The blast occurred at around 0630 hrs when she lit the gas stove for cooking.

The impact of the explosion was such that three adjacent houses in the narrow street were razed to the ground. Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and rescued 12 people trapped under the rubble and shifted them to the Government hospital for treatment where the condition of three people were said to be serious.

Rescue operations were on to ascertain whether more people were trapped under the debris. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Arakkonam is rushing to the spot to assist in relief and rescue operations.

Salem District Collector, Superintendent of Police and Corporation officials have reached the spot and monitoring the rescue and relief works.
