Brazil judge opens inquiry into Elon Musk

Insight Online News

Brasilia, April 8 : The Supreme Court of Brazil has launched a probe into Elon Musk after the X owner obstructed justice challenging the court’s order to block certain accounts on his social media platform and declared lifting of the “unconstitutional” restrictions on several formerly Twitter handles.

Several media reports quoting a court document said Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Sunday opened the inquiry into Musk for obstruction of justice involving his social media company X.

Musk has challenged a decision by Moraes to block certain accounts related to perpetrators of last year’s January 8 riots when thousands of far-right wing supporters of Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace.

Earlier on Sunday, Musk posted that X will lift the restrictions, because “they were unconstitutional”. He also called for Moraes to “resign or be impeached”. Moraes wrote in his order that Musk had launched a disinformation campaign against the Supreme Court.

If X fails to comply with the order, it will be fined 100,000 reais (USD 19,774) a day, as per a BBC report.
