Montevideo, Feb 16 : Former Uruguay international midfielder Alvaro Fernandez has announced his retirement from football after a professional career spanning almost 20 years. The 38-year-old had been without a club since parting ways with Uruguayan top flight side Plaza Colonia in January. “The moment that I had such a hard time imagining has arrived,” Fernandez said in a statement on social media. “But looking back on the path that I have traveled and reflecting on everything that I have achieved fills me with immense gratitude.” Fernandez was capped 12 times for Uruguay and played four matches at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the Celeste reached the semifinals. At club level, he had spells at clubs in Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, Portugal, Chile, the United States and Qatar.
