World Athletics: Annu Rani finishes seventh in women’s javelin

Eugene (USA), July 23 : India’s Annu Rani concluded her world championships campaign with a seventh place finish in the women’s javelin throw final here on Friday (Saturday morning in India).

Annu opened with a throw of 56.18 and recorded a best throw of 61.12m in her second attempt but failed to cross 60m mark in her remaining attempts as she threw 59.27m, 58.14m, 59.98m and 58.70m in her last four rounds.

She made the cut for the 12-women final after finishing eighth in qualifiers with a best throw of 59.60m. This was the second worlds final for the 29-year-old Indian, she finished eighth in the 2019 edition in Doha.

Annu, who holds national record with 63.82m throw, will be next competing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, starting on July 28.

Australia’s Kelsey-Lee Barber won gold and became the first woman in history to successfully defend a world championships javelin throw crown with a 66.91m effort, the world-leading throw for this year.

USA’s Kara Winger clinched the silver medal with her final attempt of 64.05m while Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi clinched bronze with a 63.27m throw.

Tokyo Olympic champion China’s Liu Shiying missed out on a podium finish as she finished fourth with a throw of 63.25m.
