Ranchi, Feb 24 : India dismissed England for 353, but lost the mercurial Rohit Sharma early as the hosts ended at 34/1 at lunch on Day 2 of the fourth Test here on Saturday.

The tourists added 51 runs to their overnight score of 302/7 with Ollie Robinson scoring the bulk of the runs, but he was eventually dismissed for 58 runs.

At the break, India trailed England by 319 runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill batting on 27 and 4, respectively.

The hosts desperately needed a breakthrough as England looked to extend the score past 375 runs in the first innings.

Ravindra Jadeja did it for India, shattering a 102-run stand and dismissing Robinson (58) caught behind Dhruv Jurel who tried to reverse sweep. The English batsman opted for the review, but it went against him as the replays confirmed a faint tickle.

Jadeja struck again in the same over removing Shoaib Bashir caught by Rajat Patidar for a duck after going for a slog.

The let-armer wrapped up the English side dismissing Jimmy Anderson leg before for duck, ending up for a four-fer. Joe Root remained unbeaten on 122.

England then got rid of Rohit through classy Jimmy Anderson, but Jaiswal looked solid with five lovely boundaries.

India leads the series 2-1 after a 434-run win in the third test at Rajkot. It also won the second test in Visakhapatnam by 106 runs after England won the first test in Hyderabad by 28 runs.

Brief scores: India 34/1 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 27; James Anderson 1/15) trail England 353 (Joe Root 122; Ravindra Jadeja 4/67) by 319 runs.
